Litter, litter everywhere

Sometimes it’s fly tipping – mattress in Roborough Lane – and sometimes it’s I don’t know what – sheer b* minded idleness and disregard for other people and the environment (Station Rd just past the last house). Do report the incidents, please.

Big Lunch
This initiative was promoted by the Eden Project and kindly organised by Janet and John Donovan. Many thanks to them.

“Dear Conservation Society,
Thank you so very much for your kind and generous contribution to The Big Lunch.
It was a great success and a drawing together of the Tamerton community. There was over 50 in attendance. The meal followed by a beetle drive was very much enjoyed.
Thank you once again.”

The Horses Field – behind the Old Chapel.
This field is a backdrop to the village, about 1 ½ acres. It was purchased by Mr and Mrs Bebbington in the 1970s and has been used for horse grazing since then. Mrs Barbara Bebbington was a very active and dedicated secretary of the village conservation society and wished to preserve the rural and visual amenity which the field provided. The field comes up for auction by Kivells on 30th June with a guide price of £40,000. We hope that the new owner will share Mrs Bebbington’s vision.

Application for Planning in Principle on Mary Dean Ave    25/00575/PIP
Readers will remember in the last newsletter the ridiculous and opportunistic proposal to put 6 houses on ’the green.’ The application has been refused and we must commend the local active opposition and efforts of Cllr Carol Ney in achieving this.

Drains at Sadler’s Way

We understand that the Copleston Heights storm drains have now been connected to SWW drains – hence the removal of the pit and safety fencing. We will mention that this is once again due to the persistence and community concern of a local resident.

Police cyber security (anti computer fraud) talk
Plymouth Rotary Club organised a talk by the Police cyber protect officer, Mike Harrison, on 24th June. Mike provided 12 tips (we would describe them more as strong guidance) the latest being avoid QR codes which, stuck over the originals, send you to scam websites.

www.actionfraud.police.uk – for reporting, news, alerts and advice.

The Local Plan and Land off Horsham Lane

The Joint Local Plan, developed with West Devon and South Hams runs from 2014 to 2034.  It will be no surprise that our council PCC is working on the successor and this includes a call for development land for 2,208 houses over the next 5 years. – phrased as ‘can you help us?’  We now see promoters answering the call such as a company called Waddeton Park of Exeter with 35 acres, suitable for 250 houses, off Horsham Lane (see above).

We do know that PCC will be submitting their (our?) own local plan and not joining with the adjacent authorities. The strategic planning officers are difficult to contact.

TFVCS website
Amongst the latest additions is an article and map explaining the reasons for sewer overflows, particularly at Church Row Lane and what SWW plan to do about the problem.

Parking on Pavements
We have had a number of people raising the issue of parking on pavements in the village. This is really a matter for PCC highways and councillors but we are not above taking the issue forward if it is detrimental to life in the village and the community ‘feel’ which we hope to foster.

A technical opinion is that PonP is not illegal other than in London although it can be regarded as nuisance if it obstructs pedestrians (and prams and wheelchairs). Countermeasures of yellow lines are seen as ineffective as it is only crossing them which is illegal (so you’d have to catch someone at it rather than deducing that their vehicle had been ‘magicked’ over them). Bollards e.g. those opposite the post office are probably most effective particularly as they do not need a traffic order to set them up.

We would be interested to hear people’s views on the subject.

Cann House Corner
Readers may recall that a car ‘exited’ the bend at Cann House corner and went through the garden wall of the old Coach House, across the garden and into the side of the garage. The porch to the Coach House was partly demolished and part of the wall to the garage was also demolished, debris damaging the car in the garage. Cracks have appeared in the internal wall of the Coach House.

The accident took place in the early hours of the morning which probably was the reason that, this time, luckily no pedestrian was injured.

A concerned and active local resident wrote to Plymouth Highways and this is the response so far:

“I note your concern and I have discussed the road layout with our Safety Officer who I believe met with yourself prior to the 20mph speed reduction arrangements being installed.

We will review the existing arrangement to see if we are able to reinforce the site speed reduction and warning signage.”

The previous time that there was a review of the road safety here, there appeared to be little scope for improvement as there were no serious incidents. We will keep you posted.

Next Meeting

The next TFVCS committee meeting is on Monday 1st Sept. If there is anything you wish us to consider (inside our remit as a conservation society and concerned community organisation), please let us know. mailto:villageconsoc.tamertonfoliot@gmail.com.

Yours sincerely

Dennis Silverwood
